What Is MS Contin?

MS Contin is a medication that belongs to the family of narcotics known as the “narcotic pain killers.” This medication is used on individuals suffering from chronic pain and need a strong reliever to keep the pain at bay. Cancer patients are a good example of people on whom MS Contin is used.

It may not be possible for a patient to use MS Contin unless they are already being treated with medicine of a similar pain-relieving capacity and their body has become tolerant to the drug. MS Contin is addictive and therefore only used by those to whom it has been prescribed. People using MS Contin should not take alcohol because a combination of the two could lead to severe side effects, including death. It is therefore important to check all food labels and that of other medication to make sure that none has alcohol.

Taking more than the recommended dose or abruptly abstaining from taking the drug could lead to nasty side effects. The patient should talk to their doctor should they feel that the medication is not properly serving its purpose. The medicine should not be used for a period longer than that advised by the doctor. They should talk to their doctor about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms if they want to stop using the drug.

What Is MS Contin?

People who have in the past had an allergic reaction to narcotic drugs should not take MS Contin. The same rule applies to those experiencing an asthma attack. Pregnant women should not use MS Contin as this could harm the unborn child. Lactating mothers should also keep away from the drug since it can get into the baby’s system through breast milk. You should let the doctor know if you are planning to become pregnant during the period of time when you will be using the medication. Sensitivity to the drug can occur in old people.

If a patient who is regularly taking the medicine forgets to take a dose, the dose that is missed should be taken as soon as the patient realizes that it was missed. If time to take the next dose is coming up, the dose that was missed should be skipped; they should wait for the next dose. Extra medication should not be taken to make it up for a missed dose.

An overdose of MS Contin can be fatal and therefore emergency help should be sought if excess medication has been taken. Symptoms to suggest an overdose has taken place include the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Cold skin
  • Shallow breathing
  • Fainting

Side effects that people taking MS Contin should look out for include, but are not restricted to the following:

  1. Difficulty in breathing
  2. Swelling of the tongue or face
  3. Constipation
  4. Dizziness
  5. Insomnia

MS Contin should not be used with other narcotics or any other drug that results in drowsiness or slow breathing as this might have severe side effects.

Remember to always keep all medicine in a safe place away from the reach of small children.
